Support For Children - Autism

Community Living BC (CLBC), in partnership with the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD), provides three Autism Programs:

• Early Intensive Behavioural Intervention (EIBI)
• Autism Funding: Under age six
• Autism Funding: Ages six-18

For an overview of these programs, you can view the new MCFD "A Parent's Handbook: Your Guide to Autism Programs".

“How can I have my child assessed for an autism spectrum disorder (ASD)?”

If you have concerns about your child’s development, please see your family doctor who may refer you to the British Columbia Autism Assessment Network (BCAAN) for assessment and diagnosis. BCAAN provides multidisciplinary diagnostic assessments for children under age six and clinical diagnostic assessments for children age six and older. There is no charge for a BCAAN assessment.

Families may also obtain a non-BCAAN (private) assessment diagnostic assessment that meets the same standards as a BCAAN assessment. Children under age six require a multidisciplinary diagnostic assessment. Children age six and older require a clinical diagnostic assessment (completed by a paediatrician, child psychologist, or registered psychologist).

“My child has just been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder.  What do I do now?”

Finding out your child has autism, wherever they fall on the spectrum, is an anxious time for any parent. You will have a lot of questions.  We want to make accessing the Autism programs as simple as we can for you.  We’ve developed an easy to understand chart that will take you through all the necessary steps.  For more information on the Autism programs, please visit the MCFD Autism Spectrum Disorder website.

Tip for Parents:

Your child will be eligible for funding from the first day of the month that CLBC receives all required documents. It is suggested that you mail or fax the required documents to the local CLBC Community Living Centre before your meeting with a facilitator. The facilitator will review the documents to ensure that they are complete.
